A Guide to Jaisalmer Sightseeing by Taxi

Jaisalmer’s main sights are spread between the old city, its edges and the desert beyond. A taxi with a driver is the simplest way to link them, especially in the heat or with family. This guide explains how to group places, how to pace the day and what to agree before you set off.

Why sightseeing by taxi works in Jaisalmer

The fort and havelis are close together, but the lake, Bada Bagh, Kuldhara and the dunes are not. Auto-rickshaws are useful for short hops; for a day that includes sites outside the city, a car with a driver saves time and lets you leave bags and water in the vehicle. It also lets you adjust the plan as you go, staying longer where you are enjoying yourself.

Group places by area

Thinking in clusters makes for a smoother day:

  • Old city: Jaisalmer Fort, the Jain temples inside it, Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli. These are close together and involve walking.
  • City edge: Gadisar Lake, a short drive from the fort.
  • North-west: Bada Bagh cenotaphs, a short drive out of town.
  • South-west: Kuldhara and Khaba Fort, on the way towards the desert.
  • West: Sam Sand Dunes, for sunset and desert activities.

How the driver fits around walking

Cars cannot enter the inner lanes of the fort, and haveli streets are narrow. The driver usually drops you at the nearest accessible point and waits. Expect stone paths, steps and stairs; inside some havelis, staircases are steep. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, tell us so we can suggest a gentler order.

Timing your day

Mornings are best for the fort, before the lanes get crowded and the sun gets strong. Midday suits a long lunch or a rest at the hotel. Late afternoon light flatters Bada Bagh and the dunes. If you only have one day, our City Sightseeing and Sam Sunset plan follows exactly this rhythm.

Choosing a vehicle

A sedan is comfortable for two or three people. An SUV such as the Innova gives families more space. A Tempo Traveller keeps a larger group together. Mention luggage if the tour starts from the station. See our Taxi Service page for vehicle options.

What to confirm before you go

  • Number of hours and the places to be covered
  • Whether entry tickets and camera fees are included (usually not, unless stated)
  • Whether a guide is included, or should be added
  • Parking and any waiting charges
  • Pickup and drop points

Adding a guide

A driver will get you to each place; a guide explains what you are looking at. The fort and havelis in particular reward a guide’s stories. Guide assistance can be requested when you enquire.
