Choosing when to go
Sunset times shift through the year, so the departure from Jaisalmer moves too. The drive to Sam Sand Dunes takes some time, so we plan pickups to leave room for the ride and a pause at the sunset point. The cooler months are the most comfortable; in warmer months, the late afternoon heat makes water and sun protection essential.
How the ride works
Each camel is led or accompanied by a handler. The animal kneels for you to mount, then stands in two movements: back legs first, then front. Lean back as it rises and forward as it sits. Once moving, the rhythm is gentle. Hold the saddle handle and relax your shoulders.
What to wear
- Trousers or a long skirt that allows you to sit astride
- Closed shoes or secure sandals
- Sunglasses and a scarf if it is windy
- A light jacket for after sunset, especially in winter
Travelling with children
Younger children usually ride with an adult. Handlers are used to families and will advise. Bring snacks and water, and keep the ride short if children are tired. Tell us their ages when enquiring.
Busy and quiet sunset points
In peak season, popular sunset areas are lively with riders, vendors and photographers. Some travellers enjoy the atmosphere; others want quiet. Let us know which you prefer.
Combining the ride with an evening
The ride can be the start of a longer evening. Our Camel Safari With Dance & Music package adds a folk performance and dinner, while Camel Safari With Swiss Tent adds a night at a camp.
